SYNOPSIS
A day at Roça Rio do Ouro, A day at Roça Água-Izé... Rio do Ouro and Água-Izé were the largest cocoa plantations in São Tomé and Príncipe during the Portuguese colonial period. Their production was the largest in the world at the beginning of the 20th century. Thousands of men and women were subjected to forced labour in a regime akin to slavery. The Roça is a reminder of power and domination, injustice and pain. Today, degradation is spreading throughout the space, putting the collective memory of São Tomé and Príncipe at risk of extinction. After thirty years away, I'm returning to my country and to this place to find the traces of that past.
